Ever since the debate at the end of June, I had been keenly aware of the possibility that President Joe Biden would withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. I was still on maternity leave, but it was all my friends were talking about.

“What do you think he’ll do?” they asked. “Do we like Kamala now?” they wondered. “Is there still time to replace him and get him on every ballot?” they panicked.

Now we know the answer: Biden just announced that he will not seek reelection in November, and even though I knew it was coming, I still feel very sad.

‘Proud of our president’: Democrats praise Biden’s decision to end 2024 campaign

It’s sad humanly. Joe Biden is a fundamentally good person and he didn’t want this outcome. I believe he can win, even if the data doesn’t show it. And it’s sad politically. Biden was a great president with a record to be very proud of. No matter who comes out on top of our list of nominees, we’ll no doubt be congratulating him on his accomplishments, and himself, but there was a joy in his words as he spoke about what the Biden-Harris Administration has accomplished that I will truly miss.

As he always says, it’s personal to him.

The passage of the American Rescue Plan in response to COVID-19 was personal: Thanks to Biden, low- to moderate-income Americans got $1,400 to put toward groceries and rent, the child tax credit was extended, and more than $7 billion was allocated for small business loans.

It was personal reasons that I passed a bipartisan infrastructure bill. Thanks to Biden, we are getting much-needed investments in roads, bridges, mass transit and airports. Over $60 billion is dedicated to broadband expansion. And $55 billion is dedicated to clean drinking water. Notably, not a single Republican voted for this bill.

It was personal reasons that led to the passage of a bipartisan gun control bill. Thanks to Biden, we have the largest gun control bill in the last 30 years. The bill includes incentives for states to pass red flag laws, banning gun ownership for people convicted of domestic violence. It also expands background checks for people ages 18-21. Did Biden get everything he wanted? Of course not. But he got it done.

The passage of the Inflation Control Act is for personal reasons. Thanks to Biden, America has made the largest investment in climate change in its history. Corporations must now pay their fair share. Medicare can negotiate prices for certain high-cost drugs. Insulin capped at $35 a month! That’s what Biden would say.

The passage of the CHIPS and Sciences Act was personal. Thanks to Biden, more than $50 billion in federal subsidies for semiconductor manufacturing have been provided, creating thousands of new, high-paying jobs across America. The result has been more than $200 billion in private sector investment. In 10 years, the United States will produce nearly 20% of the world’s most advanced chips. This is how we compete with China.

Moreover, under Biden, unemployment is at an all-time low and the stock market is at an all-time high. We produce more oil than any country in history — 13 million barrels per day. Our economy is the envy of the world. NATO is stronger, and we are a force for good in the world.

I could go on and on, but I’m sure you’ll hear about all these accomplishments and more as the campaign unfolds.

I know I speak for the rank and file Democrats when I say we’re grateful for Joe Biden’s four amazing years and we’re really, really sad that times have flown by so wonderfully.
