Kathy Hochul and Nassau executive Bruce Blakeman argue about ICE and being a sanctuary state

New York Gubernatorial Debate Heats Up

The New York gubernatorial race intensified on Tuesday as Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman exchanged sharp criticisms during their debate. Topics included President Donald Trump, a recent incident involving ICE, and the ongoing issue of inflation.

The debate kicked off with questions surrounding the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after it faced significant backlash in New York City. This outrage stemmed from the shooting of a 28-year-old Dominican man, described by the Department of Homeland Security as having failed to follow lawful orders during a targeted operation in the Bronx. Thankfully, a 5-year-old boy in the vehicle was unharmed.

Blakeman, a Republican, accused Hochul of enabling criminal behavior by advocating for ICE to release the man. He posed the question: “What was this guy doing in New York?” He attributed it to Hochul’s policies that, in his view, turned the state into a sanctuary. He elaborated on the man’s illegal entry, prior convictions, and pending drug charges while criticizing Hochul for defending such individuals. “I’ve cooperated with ICE, we got over 2,000 migrants with criminal records out of my county without upsetting schools or hospitals. Cooperation with federal law enforcement makes our communities safer,” he asserted.

In response, Hochul dismissed Blakeman’s claims as a “non-answer,” arguing that he failed to denounce ICE’s actions. “He seems fine with ICE firing into cars haphazardly, which could have endangered a child,” Hochul contended. She emphasized her oversight of numerous police agencies, stating that such behavior is unacceptable and that ICE is “out of control.” Blakeman countered that the shooting wouldn’t have happened without Hochul’s policies that he believes invite crime.

Hochul passionately defended her stance, insisting, “New York is not a sanctuary for criminals. End of story.” The debate also veered towards Trump and the economy, with Hochul criticizing Blakeman’s ties to him. She accused him of overlooking the adverse economic impact of Trump’s policies, highlighting rising gas prices and grocery costs. “People are struggling, and that didn’t have to happen,” she added.

Blakeman quickly shifted the blame back to Hochul, stating that her record is one of failure marked by high taxes and utility rates. He acknowledged his relationship with Trump but also pointed out endorsements from various figures across the political spectrum, including Democrats. Hochul retorted dismissively, “Alright, you got two votes. Good for you.”
