A Louisiana man arrested for stabbing a woman and two children to death was being treated for schizophrenia and had started hearing voices the day before, relatives said.
A 30-year-old Amite man was arrested on three counts of first-degree murder after Thursday's killing.
Family members identified the victim as the suspect's son, 1-year-old Hayden Madison. his sister, Rhonda Powell, 40; and Powell's son, 10-year-old Braylon Powell.
The suspect remained jailed Saturday in St. Helena Parish, and sheriff's dispatchers said they did not know whether the suspect had met with a judge or an attorney.
The Parish Sheriff's Office said all three people were dead when officers arrived.
Cousin Deondra Robertson-Warner told WBRZ-TV that the suspect and her son lived with Powell and that a relative took her to the hospital after she started hearing voices the day before the stabbing. spoke.
But Dr. Robertson-Warner said the hospital gave him an unusual type of medication and denied him inpatient psychiatric treatment despite requests from relatives who said he was exhibiting aggressive behavior. .
“No one could survive in that house because the mental health system failed,” Robertson Warner told WAFB-TV.
“If he had been dedicated, he would be where he should be today and the rest of my family would be alive.”
