New York man allegedly placed hidden cameras in public park restroom; captured explicit images of children

A New York man secretly videotaped hundreds of women and girls in public restrooms at the local park where he worked, federal prosecutors allege.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York said 54-year-old John Towers placed a hidden camera in the women’s restroom of a park in Putnam County, New York, but authorities declined to release the name of the park. .

Towers allegedly used installed cameras to film a “prepubescent minor” and a woman using the restroom.

“John Towers’ disturbing conduct violated the public’s trust by installing hidden cameras in public restrooms and using them to capture sexually explicit images of children,” said U.S. Attorney Damien Williams. said. “As today’s arrests demonstrate, we will use every tool available to law enforcement to investigate and prosecute those who are accused of producing sexually exploited children.”

Towers allegedly used an old cell phone and 10 “spy cameras” to record about 800 explicit videos of girls and women using the restroom, according to a Manhattan federal complaint.

More than 6,000 images and videos uploaded to the internet were also discovered, according to the complaint.

Officials said three of the spy cameras were designed to look like ballpoint pens, while others looked like small cameras with battery packs, antennas and buttons.

Prosecutors argued that Towers transferred the recordings to a hard drive.

When authorities searched Towers’ home on March 19, they found a computer and hard drive filled with pornographic images.

Many of the files contained the misspelled term “yung,” prosecutors claimed.

Towers is charged in a federal complaint with sexual exploitation of a minor (minimum sentence of 15 years, maximum sentence of 30 years) and possession of child pornography (maximum sentence of 20 years).
