Venezuela Resumes Trade Relations with the US

Recently, there’s been a significant shift in Venezuela’s engagement with the United States. Fox News correspondent Steve Harrigan reported live from Caracas, discussing how Venezuela is reopening its economy and reinstating commercial ties with the U.S. A notable aspect of this renewed relationship is a substantial increase in crude oil exports, which have hit a seven-year peak at 1.23 million barrels per day. This development follows American Airlines’ decision to restart direct flights to Miami, coinciding with the U.S. arrest of Nicolas Maduro. Analysts are looking into the potential political and economic consequences for both nations.

The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced that the U.S. and its partners successfully extracted all remaining enriched uranium from a research reactor in Venezuela, a notable move aimed at enhancing safety standards. The RV-1 reactor had been a part of nuclear research for decades, but it became redundant after operations halted in 1991.

According to the NNSA, a team from its Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Agency collaborated with experts from the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research to safely remove about 13.5 kilograms, or around 30 pounds, of uranium. They ensured the material was carefully secured in spent fuel casks. This uranium will be transported to the U.S. for further processing and repurposing.

The process included transporting the supplies over 160 miles to a port in Venezuela. There, specialist carriers arranged by a UK-based company took over. The shipment reached the U.S. in early May, where U.S. teams managed the unloading at the Savannah River Facility in South Carolina, preparing the material for processing into low-enriched uranium.

This operation follows months after President Trump had ordered the military to detain Maduro and his wife earlier this year.

NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams highlighted the success of this operation, stating, “The safe removal of all enriched uranium from Venezuela sends another signal to the world of a restored and reborn Venezuela.” He praised the efforts that accomplished what usually takes years in a matter of months, attributing this swift action to President Trump’s leadership.
