Chicago Mayor Pritzker Accused of Rejecting Federal Aid Amid Crime Surge

Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with Governor Pritzker, has turned down federal assistance from President Trump as the city grapples with a 9% increase in violent crime, particularly homicides. In related discussions, former FBI Special Agent Nicole Parker and former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva explored the city’s choice to release a teacher connected to a mass shooting and examined the FBI’s strategies against a perceived terrorist threat to the White House.

In a separate incident, a man from North Carolina is facing charges after allegedly forcing his way into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and stabbing her 5-year-old son before heading to a nearby Taco Bell.

The Pineville Police Department reported that 31-year-old Jehaz Akil Khaliq Echols has been charged with first-degree murder. Officers arrived at the Sabal Point Apartments shortly after midnight to find the child with multiple stab wounds.

The police quickly provided emergency medical assistance and transported the injured boy to a hospital, where he was later declared dead.

An arrest affidavit disclosed that Echols’ ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of his child, stated he entered her son’s room and closed the door. She recalled hearing a struggle, then opened the door to find her son bleeding and unresponsive, prompting her to call 911.

Fortunately, another child present in the apartment was unharmed. The police later apprehended Echols at a nearby Taco Bell. Authorities confirmed that the attack was domestic rather than random, although the motive remains unclear.

Echols has a history of violent behavior, having been previously convicted of assault. This includes a specific incident in October 2020 in North Carolina. In the current year alone, he faces two additional assault charges involving women—one for striking a woman with a belt and another for throwing car keys at a different woman who refused to return a rental car.

Currently, he is being held in Mecklenburg County Jail without the possibility of bail, and his next court appearance is set for July 30th.
