Pope Leo Responds to Trump Criticism
Pope Leo, during a flight to Algeria, expressed that he isn’t intimidated by the Trump administration. He emphasized his focus on delivering the Church’s message, which he believes centers around the Gospel and promoting peace. “I do not view my role as being political,” he stated.
Meanwhile, President Trump criticized both the Pope and his social media platform, “Truth Social,” in a harsh message over the weekend. Trump labeled Pope Leo as “weak on crime” and “terrible on foreign policy,” suggesting he should focus more on his papal duties rather than engage in politics. “Pope Leo is hurting not just himself but the Catholic Church,” Trump added.
In response to Trump’s comments about his social media site, the Pope indicated he wasn’t interested in the debate but noted the irony of the platform’s name: “Let’s say no more.”
Pope Leo made clear that his remarks were not intended as an attack, stressing his commitment to peace and dialogue among nations. “There are too many people suffering around the world,” he remarked, highlighting the need for a different approach to conflict.
Trump reiterated his earlier sentiments, expressing his discomfort with the Pope’s stance on nuclear weapons and crime. He remarked, “I’m not a big fan of Pope Leo,” criticizing his liberal views and his handling of international threats.
During the ongoing conflict with Iran, Pope Leo emphasized that his advocacy for peace does not align with Trump’s approach. He expressed disappointment that his message could be misinterpreted. “I will continue to do what I believe is the mission of the Church in the world today,” he asserted.
Interestingly, Trump has indicated that he appreciates Leo’s elevation to the papacy, although he acknowledged preferring Leo’s brother, Louis, who he claims aligns more closely with his views. “If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican,” he stated, reflecting his belief in his significant influence.
