President Zelenskyy: Russia evading peace concessions from Ukraine with its partners

Ukrainian President Criticizes Russia’s Tactics

Kyiv: President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of Ukraine accused Russia of attempting to manipulate the U.S. president in order to stall negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing war.

During a conversation in Kyiv, Zelenskiy rejected former President Trump’s claim that Ukraine was obstructing the peace process. “We’ve always been proponents of peace,” he stated, highlighting that anyone in their own territory would naturally seek to halt the conflict. However, he insisted that Russia is the one delaying discussions to avoid making necessary concessions. “They’re just toying with the president of the United States,” he added.

When asked if he believed President Putin was being disingenuous, Zelenskiy responded, “Yes, I think so. He wants to stall any talks.” He mentioned Ukraine’s willingness to freeze the conflict at its current borders, expressing readiness to negotiate once a ceasefire is achieved, but he firmly rejected Russia’s demands for territorial concessions in areas they have failed to secure following years of conflict.

Zelenskiy spoke with reporters from a secured office in Kyiv, where dim lights and sandbagged hallways highlighted the ongoing tensions. Elaborate portraits of soldiers adorned the walls of the building, underscoring the somber atmosphere.

As the civil war reached its fifth anniversary, Zelenskiy acknowledged a sense of weariness among the Ukrainian people regarding the ongoing conflict. “Everyone wants peace, but many are tired,” he shared. Nevertheless, he noted that not everyone is willing to accept what he termed “Putin’s offerings.”

He also urged Trump to visit Ukraine, stating, “He will witness the aftermath of the attacks and see firsthand what life is like here. It’s not just about survival.”

Zelenskiy remained optimistic despite significant losses, asserting, “Russia couldn’t and can’t occupy us. They didn’t win, and that’s a victory for us. We’ve defended our independence and freedom. They didn’t change our country or our flag.” He expressed confidence that Russia ultimately understands it made a major misstep in its aggression.
