Trump Talks Potential Meeting with Iranian Leader
In a recent interview on “Pod Force One,” President Trump mentioned his intention to meet Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, describing their relationship as “getting along very well,” even as peace talks remain stalled.
Mojtaba, who is 56, hasn’t made a public appearance since the conflict erupted on February 28 due to a surprise airstrike involving the U.S. and Israel. Reports suggest he was injured during this attack, which also claimed the lives of family members, including his father, the former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Trump commented on Khamenei’s absence, saying, “There’s no question he’s involved. Yes, I think they respect him very much.” He implied that this prolonged seclusion has complicated peace negotiations.
“I didn’t have a chance to meet him… If you believe that story, he’s missing a lot of things,” Trump remarked. He further speculated, “They say he’s giving the approval, because that’s how it’s been for a long time,” suggesting a continued influence from the Khamenei family.
When asked about a potential meeting, Trump replied, “Yeah, I want to see him. I want to see everyone. I want to see him, and depending on how everything goes, we’ll probably meet at some point.”
Trump’s approach to direct engagement with U.S. adversaries is somewhat unconventional, as he believes that breaking away from traditional diplomatic protocols could ultimately enhance national security.
Previously, during his first term, he held three meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which he characterized as exchanging “love letters,” leading to a decrease in aggressive rhetoric.
He also attempted to invite the Taliban to Camp David for discussions during that term, although that plan was ultimately abandoned.
What’s interesting here is the change in Trump’s tone towards Mojtaba Khamenei. He had previously referred to Khamenei’s leadership choice as “rash” and “unacceptable.” Rumors regarding Khamenei’s sexuality reportedly sparked a dismissive reaction from Trump and his aides during a meeting with intelligence officials.
It seems these complex dynamics, relationships, and perceptions continue to play a significant role in international diplomacy.
