Trump Visits South Carolina Ahead of Midterm Elections
President Donald Trump is currently in South Carolina, just days before the midterm elections, as surveys indicate a challenging situation for Republicans in this usually solidly red state.
On Thursday, Trump is set to hold a rally in Rock Hill, marking his second visit to South Carolina within a two-week span. His aim is to boost support for Republican candidates, particularly Michael Whatley, who is running for the U.S. Senate seat in North Carolina, and Sen. Darline Graham, who has stepped into the role following the unexpected passing of her brother, long-serving Sen. Lindsey Graham, in July.
As one local political analyst remarked, “Republicans are taking nothing for granted.”
Rock Hill is a key location for Trump’s rally. It’s conveniently located just thirty minutes south of Charlotte, North Carolina, which is likely to attract a large crowd from the surrounding area.
Interestingly, the city falls within the district of Rep. Ralph Norman, who recently contested Darline Graham in a Republican Senate primary runoff but did not succeed.
There remains a degree of skepticism among some of Norman’s supporters regarding Graham, with reports of a write-in campaign that could potentially undermine her chances against Democrat Annie Andrews.
Recent data from Blaze News’ Poll Watch suggests that Graham holds a slim lead of just 1.7 points, while a poll from The New York Times/Sienna shows the race in a dead heat. If the write-in campaign manages to draw even a small fraction of Republican votes away from Graham, it could tilt the outcome in favor of Andrews.
“The president is coming to Ralph Norman territory to rally support for Darline Graham and to emphasize that voting for Ralph Norman equates to voting for Annie Andrews,” said Brent Nelsen, a political science professor at Furman University.
Before the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, his re-election was thought to be virtually guaranteed. While some Republican insiders are reportedly worried about Darline Graham’s chances, Trump and his supporters remain positive about her performance.
“She’s doing well,” Trump stated regarding Darline Graham, expressing confidence in her campaign.
A Republican National Committee official described her as a “commonsense conservative” running in a state that Trump has won three times in the past. Even so, this official acknowledged that “Republicans are taking nothing for granted,” emphasizing the push to mobilize voters across all states to maintain Republican majorities in Congress.
Turning to North Carolina, the outlook for Whatley appears less optimistic. Poll Watch reveals that former Democrat Governor Roy Cooper holds a significant lead of over ten points in his race.
In addition to his rally efforts, Trump has been active on social media, endorsing Whatley and criticizing Cooper’s record, particularly on issues of crime and public safety. Trump asserted, “There has never been a Governor with such a bad record on crime, and there never will be!”
