Trump Rescinds ICE Vehicle Stop Suspension
Within a day of the Department of Homeland Security instructing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to halt vehicle stops nationwide, President Donald Trump reversed that order.
Reportedly, Trump was quite upset about this initial decision. He expressed his resolve to maintain ICE’s authority, emphasizing the importance of traffic stops in their operations. He stated, “We cannot abandon one of ICE’s most important and effective crime-fighting tools: traffic stops!”
This unexpected twist ended a brief period of uncertainty. Initially, DHS officials announced via email that all stops were suspended “immediately,” encouraging agencies to focus on other immigration operations instead. By the morning after the suspension, the White House confirmed that Trump had reversed the policy, describing it as an internal directive that didn’t represent overall departmental policy.
Tom Homan, a Border Patrol official, described the halt as a non-policy change, suggesting it was merely a time to assess recent shootings and training deficiencies. He reported that the decision originated from DHS leadership.
Pressure was mounting on DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin even before Trump made his announcement. Republican Senator Susan Collins from Maine had urged him to terminate “non-essential vehicle stops” during a private conversation.
When Trump’s decision became public, Mullin sidestepped commenting directly on the reinstatement of vehicle stops. Instead, he criticized Democrats, asserting that the primary aim of DHS is to protect officers and to keep criminals off the streets, encouraging those living illegally in the United States to “leave now.”
This policy whiplash can be traced back to a series of fatal shootings linked to ICE’s enforcement. Two individuals were shot during operations in Houston and Maine just days prior, while another was reported dead in Florida, allegedly on the run from agents.
In response to the alarming incidents, DHS vowed to implement body cameras for all ICE personnel nationwide.
