Trump Discusses Options for Iran’s Enriched Uranium Amid Peace Talks
As discussions between the United States and Iran progress, President Donald Trump has put forward potential methods for managing Iran’s enriched uranium.
On Monday, in a post on Truth Social, Trump detailed his vision for the enriched uranium situation in Iran. He suggested that the ideal outcome would involve a cooperative approach with Iran.
“The enriched uranium (nuclear dust!) will be immediately handed over to the United States and either brought back home and destroyed, preferably in coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and destroyed on the spot or at another acceptable location with the Atomic Energy Commission or equivalent witnessing the process and events,” he stated.
Iran’s nuclear initiative is widely regarded as a major factor behind the U.S.-led military actions against the country, which commenced on February 28. Trump and his administration have consistently argued that Middle Eastern nations should not possess nuclear weapons, whereas Iranian officials claim their nuclear work is purely for peaceful purposes.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has indicated that Iran has enriched uranium to levels as high as 60%. Their reports suggest that most commercial nuclear reactors operate with fuel enriched to below 5%.
Interestingly, reaching a 20% enrichment level poses more significant challenges than the leap from 60% to 90%, which is categorized as weapons-grade uranium.
