Trump Nominates Dr. Nicole Safier as Surgeon General

On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced a shift in his nomination for Surgeon General, selecting Dr. Nicole Safier, a radiologist and contributor for a news network. This decision comes after the initial nominee, Dr. Casey Means, a notable supporter of the MAHA initiative, faced an impasse in her confirmation process.

Dr. Means was originally on the path to nomination, but various delays ultimately led to the nomination being handed to Safier instead. There had been significant obstacles in securing Means’ confirmation, largely due to opposition from Republican senators, including Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski.

Trump’s announcement came alongside criticism of Cassidy, whom he labeled as “very dishonest,” claiming that Cassidy was obstructing the nomination process. The confirmation struggle for Means has been prolonged since her hearings in February, where her stance on vaccinations raised concerns among some senators.

The friction in the nomination arose from conflicting views about vaccine safety, particularly regarding measles and hepatitis B. While Means asserted the vaccines are safe, her hesitance to unequivocally support them as the senators wished contributed to the roadblocks.

Despite the change in nominations, Trump expressed admiration for Means, emphasizing her dedication and contributions to public health. He remarked that she would keep fighting crucial health issues like childhood diseases, malnutrition, and rising autism rates. Additionally, he noted that Cassidy’s actions were politically motivated and detrimental to the process.

Callie Means, Dr. Means’ brother and a senior adviser, voiced his pride in her conduct throughout the nomination process. He accused Cassidy of employing delay tactics and criticized him for allegedly undermining her candidacy.

As the nomination transition unfolds, it appears that Dr. Safier’s appointment will bring a new direction to the health initiatives, though the political tensions surrounding the previous nomination still linger.
