Mid-Air Miracle: Baby Born on Delta Flight
A woman unexpectedly gave birth on a Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta to Portland on Friday night, creating quite the scene on the five-hour journey.
As Flight 478 traveled west, a passenger went into labor. Thankfully, a doctor and two nurses were on board, and with the help of flight attendants, they sprang into action to assist the mother.
Tina Fritz, a paramedic from Oregon who aided in the delivery, described the event as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.” She and her colleague, Karlyn Powell, were traveling with limited medical supplies and had to improvise quickly to support the woman in labor.
Fritz recalled, “I asked for an OB kit, but they didn’t have one. I asked for a blanket—no luck there either. I thought, maybe I can get a blanket from another passenger. And shoelaces? The flight attendant cut some for us.” It seemed like a scramble, but somehow it all came together in the end.
Fortuitously, the delivery went smoothly. “She was like, ‘I have to strain, I have to strain,'” Fritz recalled. “After just a few pushes, the baby came out just fine. The mother was incredible—she was a real rock star.” The baby made her debut about 30 minutes before landing at Portland International Airport.
After the birth, Fritz cut the umbilical cord, wrapped the baby, and, amidst a cheering crowd of passengers, returned the newborn to her mother. “We held on as the plane touched down—nothing buckled, it was just a regular landing,” she said.
Passengers described the atmosphere as surreal. Jess Cushenberry, who was seated a few rows away with her daughter, initially didn’t comprehend what was happening. “At first, I didn’t really know, but then somehow, my seatmate caught wind that the baby was born,” she shared.
Cushenberry also noted that the mother remained remarkably calm during the entire process. “I’ve given birth before, so I know it’s not easy, but she didn’t scream,” she said. She even offered her own blanket when crew members requested assistance.
The flight crew received high praise for their composure and efficiency under pressure. “They probably went home and needed a drink after that,” Cushenberry laughed, acknowledging their efforts to keep everyone organized. “They did a fantastic job.”
Once on the ground, emergency services attended to the mother and her newborn, both reported to be in stable condition.
A Delta representative expressed gratitude for the staff and medical volunteers aboard the flight. “The health and safety of our guests is always our top priority, and we wish the new family all the best,” the spokesperson stated.
