The Trump Administration Revitalizes National Guard for Immigration Enforcement
Reports indicate that the Trump administration is increasing the number of National Guard forces and moving forward with processing deportation documents. Following the decision to let National Guard members work alongside immigrant staff, security personnel have been reassigned to assist the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) in managing the considerable amount of paperwork required for arrests and deportations.
As of now, the Department of Homeland Security is expanding operations in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
Usage parameters for security personnel in relation to immigration matters are now officially defined. “We are coordinating with the Department of Defense and have a clear understanding of our next steps,” stated an ICE spokesperson, Tanya Roman.
The initiative aims to aid security forces in “processing the alien” and to support ICE officers in their bureaucratic functions, enabling them to return to active field operations. These new duties are expected to commence this month.
The Pentagon has confirmed that the National Guard will be deployed according to Title 32 regulations.
Since taking office this year, the Trump administration has revitalized around 20,000 federal and national security personnel, as reported by Intercept. Forces from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines are currently active in Arizona, California, Florida, New Mexico, and Texas.
The Pentagon has also outlined plans to utilize National Guard forces under Title 32 instead of relying on the Marine and Navy Reserves that were previously assisting ICE.
“Through proactive planning and collaboration with ICE partners, the department has identified that certain operational needs may necessitate direct engagement with individuals in ICE detention,” explained Sean Parnell, a spokesman for the Pentagon.
ICE’s Tanya Roman reiterated that the Department of Homeland Security is working closely with the Department of Defense to finalize the details of the partnership allowing the National Guard to enhance broader immigration enforcement efforts across the United States.
