Socialist mayoral candidate in NYC stands by Trump criticism and rent freeze proposal

Mamdani Addresses Rent Freeze Pledge Amid Criticism

Zohran Mamdani, a socialist candidate for mayor in New York City, discussed his commitment to freezing rents during a press conference. He reiterated his position on wanting to oppose what he calls Trump’s “worst nightmare,” emphasizing the importance of working together for the benefit of New Yorkers.

“I’ve often said that it’s not just a reflexive response to political issues,” Mamdani stated. He contrasted his approach with that of former Governor Andrew Cuomo, arguing that collaboration is essential to protect the city from cuts and harmful policies.

Journalist Llenas raised concerns about Mamdani’s ability to work with the White House effectively. Mamdani faced criticism regarding his past policing policies, which some find alarming.

Responding to the broader political climate, Mamdani expressed that Trump’s actions are detrimental to the city and its residents. He pointed out the severe implications of the current administration’s approach, likening it to “stealing food from the hungry” and exacerbating healthcare issues.

Regarding the rent freeze, Mamdani answered claims that it could hinder the funds necessary for housing development. “The rent freeze we talk about is already happening; it’s not new,” he said. “There have been instances under prior administrations, and some issues we face with housing supply are deeply rooted in policy.” He acknowledged that vacancy rates are troublingly low, which restricts the city’s growth.

When asked about landlord concerns over increased insurance costs, Mamdani noted that many landlords are trying to adapt by forming their own insurance entities. He mentioned that though some landlords believe renters could handle modest increases, it’s an issue of affordability for many New Yorkers.

He proposed increasing rent vouchers, pointing out that numerous residents in rent-stabilized apartments could benefit significantly. Mamdani argued that while rent freezes can be temporary, they are part of a broader conversation he has been pushing for years.
