Thomas Massie allies with Democrats against Trump's Iran strikes without authorization

Opposition to U.S. Military Action Against Iran Grows

Rep. Thomas Massey (R-Ky.), a consistent critic of President Trump, has allied with eight Democrats to oppose Operation Epic Fury, a military strike targeting Iran.

Massey expressed his concerns on X, stating that Trump did not seek Congressional approval for the action, labeling it “an act of war not authorized by Congress.” He elaborated, saying, “I’m against this war. This is not ‘America First.'” He plans to collaborate with @RepRoKhanna to advocate for a Congressional vote regarding the conflict with Iran, emphasizing the constitutional requirement for legislative approval.

Reports indicate that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a meeting with the Gang of Eight—comprised of key Congressional leaders—earlier in the week. House Speaker Mike Johnson’s press secretary noted that Rubio briefed the speaker before the strikes on Iran were initiated.

Trump reminded observers that he has been the target of the Iranian regime, referencing threats of assassination in retaliation for the prior administration’s actions against Qassem Soleimani. “I was the hunted, and now I’m the hunter,” he stated before launching Operation Midnight Hammer, amid a backdrop of warnings directed at Iran.

The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the authority to declare war. However, a U.S. official stated that Trump’s military operations in the region, coordinated with Israel, target military infrastructures deemed an “imminent threat.” Interestingly, while the U.S. military is not focusing on Iranian leadership, Israel reportedly is.

Massey and Ro Khanna are proposing a Congressional vote as tensions rise. While responding to criticisms, Trump and Rubio justified their lack of warning to the legislative leaders about impending operations due to fears of compromised safety and operational security.

The Gang of Eight includes four leaders from both parties and members of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees. Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), a leading member of these committees, expressed deep concern about the lack of a clear military strategy, stating that the attack was unnecessary and without justification. He mentioned, “This is a war of choice with no strategic end goal.” Himes articulated a commitment to ensure that the decision-making process involves Congress.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), also critical of the military operation, highlighted the importance of adhering to legal frameworks. He stated that merely acknowledging Iran’s aggressions does not absolve the president from the responsibility of acting lawfully. Warner urged Trump to clarify his objectives and strategies for operation, stressing the need for a coherent plan to prevent escalation.

On the Republican side, lawmakers like Rep. Rick Crawford (R-Ark.) believe Trump had given Iran sufficient chances for diplomacy. Responding to concerns regarding potential military actions, Crawford expressed confidence in the U.S. military’s capabilities and underscored the need for maintaining strategic goals to ensure national and allied security.

Meanwhile, Trump maintained his firm stance on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, reinforcing this message during recent speeches. He emphasized that historical patterns of military involvement should not be repeated and called for meticulous planning in military engagements. Others, like Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), echoed sentiments that U.S. military actions should be scrutinized for their adherence to constitutional mandates.

The growing dissent among lawmakers is palpable, with members like Kaine and Kim calling for immediate legislative action to address the use of military force against Iran. They argue that without clear justification, the risks of escalation are too great and could lead to unnecessary conflicts.
