An Ozona, Florida, man faces multiple animal cruelty charges after surrendering seven cats to an animal shelter, where six of them eventually died because he was “tired of taking care of them,” according to authorities. being asked.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office announced that 36-year-old Ian Bender was arrested Wednesday and charged with seven counts of animal cruelty.
Pinellas County Animal Services reported to the sheriff’s office that seven cats were surrendered to the SPCA in Largo on March 8. Five of the animals were placed in small plastic boxes, and the other two were placed in small suitcases.
When shelter staff opened the suitcase and trash can, they found five cats dead and two in critical condition, Sheriff’s Office detectives said.

One cat in critical condition had to be euthanized due to its poor condition, and the only surviving cat reportedly had an internal temperature of 106 degrees. All seven cats were less than 18 months old.
Investigation revealed that the cats were wet when removed from the trash cans and suitcases, and had urine and feces inside, indicating that the cats were alive when they were taken inside. It was suggested.
Further investigation revealed that Bender was keeping an eye on the cats for a friend who was on a business trip.

Investigators said the cats were healthy and in good condition when Bender began caring for them. But after a week and a half, Bender said she was “tired of taking care of them,” detectives allege.

Investigators say Bender put the cat in a trash can and a suitcase and dropped it off at the SPCA because there was no carrier to transport it.
