The woman’s identity has not yet been released, but police say she went out for a walk around 7:30 p.m. Monday night and did not return to her Clear Lake home until her husband reported her missing early Tuesday morning.
The woman was in her 60s.
“They live over there. We see eight-foot, 10-foot babies. We know which shore to stay away from.”
A Houston Police Department dive team reported finding her body on top of an alligator in Horseshoe Bay near El Dorado Boulevard. A police sergeant shot and killed the alligator “to prevent it from causing further damage to the body.”
Police are waiting for a report from the coroner to determine if she was killed by an alligator.
Maggie Berger, a spokeswoman for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s law enforcement division, released a statement about the incident. To KTRK-TV.
“On May 28, Texas Game Warden assisted the Houston Police Department (HPD) in the recovery of human remains found near an alligator. The woman’s cause of death has not been determined. HPD is currently investigating the incident and will be the lead agency going forward. During this time, our hearts go out to the woman’s family.”
“I’ve never heard of something like that happening here before. It’s kind of scary.”
Resident Angela DeRousse often fishes in the bayou. Said She told KTRK that she often sees baby alligators in the area.
“They live over there. We have 8-foot, 10-foot babies. We know which shores they like to stay off and where they sunbathe,” she said. “This is the first time I’ve heard of something like that happening here. It’s a little scary.”
KTRK reported that fatal alligator attacks are rare in Texas, with the last recorded case being that of a 28-year-old man in 2015. Prior to that, the last reported fatal alligator attack was more than 90 years ago.
