Tragic Case in Mechanicville
New information has emerged regarding a murder-suicide investigation in which a grandmother is the primary suspect. On a recent Tuesday evening, the bodies of two adults and four children were discovered in a home in Mechanicville, a small town located north of Albany.
“Many in the community knew the families involved or had their own children and grandchildren, making it hard to grasp how six lives could end so tragically,” a local resident mentioned.
The deceased were identified as Amy Stedman, 64, her 44-year-old daughter Sarah Myers, and her grandchildren: Harper, 13, Hudson, 11, and the 10-year-old twins, Gavin and Gracelyn Harmon.
Police Chief William Rabbitt stated on Thursday that officers were sent for a welfare check after neighbors expressed concern about not seeing the family for days. He added that the bodies had been there for a while before discovery.
“I can’t say exactly how many days, but it was tough to recognize the situation at home,” he noted. The investigation revealed a number of medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, leading authorities to suspect intentional poisoning as a potential cause of death, although the official cause is still pending.
Authorities also mentioned that one of the children suffered injuries from a blunt force impact. A handwritten note found at the scene seemed to implicate Stedman, yet the inquiry continues.
“We cannot discuss the note or its author just yet,” Rabbitt stated. “Until we confirm the cause and method of death, we cannot speculate about everyone involved.” He reassured the public that there was no ongoing threat.
Investigators reached out to the children’s father, Brady Harmon, residing in Utah, who spoke to the media about facing false allegations on social media. He mentioned being embroiled in a custody dispute but denied claims of any abuse towards the children.
“I’ve never laid a finger on my kids. I know what abuse feels like. Unless you’re there every day, you really don’t know what’s happening,” Harmon expressed emotionally.
While court documents did not list allegations of abuse against either parent, Harmon recalled a specific incident in 2019 when he was allegedly attacked by Myers as they were in a disagreement over custody.
Amidst this tragedy, a GoFundMe page was discovered, started by Stedman, titled “Please Help Domestic Violence Lawyer Save Children.” Harmon also mentioned that Myers hadn’t attended a court hearing in Utah for over six years and had only appeared remotely.
Sheriff Rabbitt elaborated on the impact of this horrific event on the tight-knit community. “Mechanicville is small, with about 5,200 residents. It’s hard to reconcile the loss of six lives in such heartbreaking circumstances,” he remarked.
