Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.) said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that “the reason we have so many deaths from COVID-19” is because former President Donald Trump spread misinformation.
Host Kristen Welker said, “Let me give you the big picture: We’re only a month into the campaign. Everything she said in the past is starting to come into focus. When she campaigned in 2020, she called for a ban on fracking, support for single-payer health care and an end to private health insurance. The campaign says she no longer stands by these positions. The Trump campaign has called her a chameleon. Do you think the vice president needs to further explain why she has changed these positions?”
“All of the insults from the Trump campaign are laughable when you consider his time in office and who he fought for,” Whitmer said. “He fought for himself. He has offered no vision for America. He has stoked fear and anger. He does it all the time. He has done nothing to make anyone’s life a little better.”
She added, “In fact, we’ve seen record unemployment during his tenure. We’ve had so many COVID deaths because he spread misinformation and denied that it was even a problem. So, he’s a guy who slanders others, but he offers the American people nothing of value in terms of a vision or a plan to improve people’s lives. The contrast is stark. What you’re seeing in Chicago this week is a bunch of happy warriors who understand the middle class and how to bring more people into the middle class so we can all get on the path to prosperity, live the American dream and provide for our families.”
