Iran fired a missile at Israel on Tuesday night local time, and Israelis across the country were ordered to take shelter in air raid shelters until further notice.
The IDF said in a statement:
A short while ago, a missile was launched from Iran towards Israel.
You are instructed to remain vigilant and follow exactly the instructions of Home Front Command.
In the last few minutes, the Home Front Command has distributed life-saving instructions to various regions across the country. The public is asked to follow the guidelines of the Home Front Forces. If you hear the siren, you must enter a protected space and remain there until further notice.
The IDF has done and will continue to do everything necessary to protect civilians in the State of Israel.
IDF Spokesman Maj. Gen. Daniel Hagari addressed the nation, informing them that the Home Front Command would contact them through mobile phone alerts.
“We're strong and we're capable in this offense,” he said.
Other officials warned Israel not to film or take photographs during the attack and to avoid windows in case a missile fell nearby.
The US had previously said there were signs of an Iranian attack.
In April, Iran fired nearly 300 missiles and drones at Israel, nearly all of which were intercepted by Israeli air defenses and the air defenses of several regional US allies, causing no damage. One Bedouin girl was injured by falling debris.
update: Iran reportedly opened fire on Israel's nuclear reactor at Dimona in the Negev desert.
update: The IDF issued a separate statement.
Iran's attacks continue. We ask that you remain in your protected space until further notice. The explosions you hear are from intercepted or fallen projectiles.
Air defense arrays now identify and intercept the launches.
Israel Army Radio said Iran announced the attack was a response to the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July. On Friday, Israel killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. And along with Nasrallah, a high-ranking Hezbollah official, Abbas Nilfroshan, was killed.
Iran claimed it targeted military targets.
Unconfirmed information on social media suggests that 400 missiles were fired, two of which may have hit Israel, and the rest appear to have been intercepted.
update: Israeli Defense Forces spokesman Maj. Gen. Daniel Hagari told Israelis at around 8:30 p.m. local time that the Iranian attack had ended and no one was injured or killed.
He urged the public to be careful.
He said Israel would “respond to Iran at the place and time we decide.” …We have a plan. ”
update: The Israel Defense Forces estimates that about 180 missiles were fired, most of which were intercepted, with no Israelis injured and little damage. Initial reports said as many as 400 missiles could be fired.
