Mexican president warns Trump tariff threat ‘would lead to inflation and job losses’ for both countries

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to President-elect Donald Trump's tariff threats, warning that a trade war would lead to higher inflation and job losses in both countries.

President Trump announced on Monday that he would impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada for failing to stop illegal immigration and illegal drug smuggling into the United States.

“Such measures are unacceptable and will lead to inflation and job losses.”

Sheinbaum also said the U.S. isn't doing enough to stop illegal gun smuggling into Mexico, and Trump says Mexico isn't doing enough to stop drug smuggling into the United States. He also mentioned the president's criticism.

“If even a fraction of the money the United States allocates to war goes to building peace and promoting development, we would address the root causes of human mobility,” she wrote.

President Trump also threatened to impose a 10% tariff on China for fentanyl shipped to the United States from the communist country, and said Canada and Mexico would be subject to 25% tariffs.

“These tariffs will remain in effect until we stop drugs, especially fentanyl, and all illegal aliens from invading our country!” Trump wrote.
