Israeli Leadership’s Stance Amid International Criticism
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his commitment to securing a “complete victory” in Gaza. This statement comes in light of criticism from three major allies: Canada, France, and the UK, who have publicly condemned Israel’s actions and expressed concerns over the humanitarian situation in Palestinian territories. British Prime Minister Kiel, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have labeled the conditions in Gaza as “unbearable.”
The trio emphasized that they would not remain passive while the Netanyahu government continues what they describe as harmful actions. They warned that if military operations in Gaza do not cease and restrictions on humanitarian aid are not lifted, further concrete measures may follow.
While the three leaders did not specify what actions might be taken against Israel, they affirmed their commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state as part of working toward a two-state solution. They also highlighted that the local population is experiencing “starvation,” echoing demands from a coalition of 22 nations that are urging Israel to lift its blockade on aid to Gaza.
In his remarks, one leader criticized Israel for denying essential assistance to civilians, labeling such actions as unacceptable and potentially violative of international humanitarian law. He also took issue with statements made by some Israeli officials threatening civilians with forced relocation due to the destruction in Gaza, identifying this as a breach of international law.
Netanyahu Responds
In response, Netanyahu characterized the joint statement from Macron and Carney as a misguided endorsement of Hamas amidst the ongoing conflict. He pointed out that while Israel has maintained tight control over Gaza, they would permit a limited flow of supply trucks beginning Monday.
“By urging Israel to halt its defensive operations aimed at ensuring our survival, these leaders are effectively rewarding Hamas for its aggression,” he stated, referring to the events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack. Netanyahu encouraged European leaders to align themselves with the support offered by former President Donald Trump towards Israel.
He mentioned that if negotiations lead to the release of hostages, disarmament of Hamas, and the removal of its leadership, then peace could be achieved swiftly. “This is a civilized effort amidst chaos. Israel’s defense will continue until a decisive victory is realized,” he asserted.
In a video shared on Telegram, Netanyahu described the situation in Gaza as intense but claimed progress was being made. He stated, “We control all the territory of the strip.” Israeli military activity has intensified in Gaza as a response to the Hamas attack initiated in early October.
According to reports from Gaza’s health ministry, at least 3,340 individuals have lost their lives since Israel resumed operations on March 18, leading to a total casualty count in the conflict reaching 53,486.
