Walz Suggests China Might Mediate Iran-Israel Conflict
In a surprising statement, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz proposed that a country could possess “moral authority” to help resolve tensions between Iran and Israel. This comment came after Israeli airstrikes targeted Tehran’s nuclear facilities and top military leaders.
During an event at the Center for Progress in America (CAP), Walz mentioned, “It could be Chinese,” referring to former Biden White House official Neela Tanden. He argued that such a stance contradicts China’s professed goals of maintaining a balance of power.
Walz raised a critical question earlier: “Who is the voice of the world who can negotiate some type of agreement with this? Who holds moral authority and the ability to do so?”
China’s human rights violations against the Uyghur Muslim community are extensively documented by various watchdogs and organizations.
The US intelligence community has also noted a growing partnership among Beijing, Moscow, and Tehran, suggesting a strategy to exploit divisions within American society.
As Walz campaigns for 2024, his remarks about his trip to China have drawn criticism. He has been labeled a significant target of influence operations related to the Communist Party, which was highlighted by the Department of Homeland Security’s whistleblower office prior to last year’s election.
At 61, Walz has an interesting background; he once worked as an English teacher and briefly dated the daughter of a Chinese Communist Party official before entering politics.
He chose to marry his wife Gwen on the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, a detail that some might find notable.
Reflecting on his experiences in China back in 1991, Walz remarked on the similarities among workers, stating that the government supplied essentials like rice alongside housing.
CAP hosted discussions on governance, focusing on bridging political divides and responding to contemporary challenges.
Referring to Israel’s airstrikes, which reportedly targeted at least 20 Iranian military figures and six scientists, Walz commented, “All we’re doing is escalating the situation in the Middle East.” He added that “Iran must retaliate in their minds,” following the targeted attacks that included missile launches towards Israel.
Walz also pointed out that during Barack Obama’s administration, the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action aimed to ease sanctions on Iran in exchange for limitations on uranium enrichment. When President Trump withdrew from this deal in 2018, recent investigations by the UN revealed that Iran has not adhered to non-proliferation agreements, which has prompted denunciation from countries like France, Germany, and the UK.
