Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reached out to US immigration officials in Los Angeles, sending best wishes for fans attending the Gold Cup soccer match between Mexico and the Dominican Republic on Saturday.
She remarked, “I don’t believe a soccer game should involve immigration issues… I want US immigration and customs enforcement to not interfere,” during a press conference on Friday.
She emphasized, “Mexico is always advocating for peace.”
In a social media statement, the US Customs and Border Patrol indicated that they would ensure “proper measures” were in place during the early stages of this week’s Club World Cup soccer match.
In their response, CBP noted that they routinely provide security for significant sporting events.
“US Customs and Border Protection is collaborating with local and federal partners to maintain safety for all involved in the FIFA Club World Cup 25 and other major events, like the Super Bowl,” they added.
Meanwhile, downtown Los Angeles remains under a curfew.
The police department reported that they have arrested around 400 people since Saturday, most of whom were not dispersed.
More serious allegations include assaulting an officer, possession of a Molotov cocktail, and firearms offenses.
The Department of Homeland Security announced on Monday and Tuesday that several convicted individuals were apprehended in a recent Immigration Customs Enforcement operation in Los Angeles.
This ICE operation has led to protests and riots in various parts of the city. In response, President Trump ordered National Guard troops to support federal immigration agents while they continued with arrests.
Deputy Chief Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated, “Murderers, pedophiles, drug traffickers. These are the types of criminal illegal aliens that some are trying to shield. Will Governor Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass keep prioritizing these criminal illegal aliens over their citizens?”
