Lawmakers declare Trump's actions against Iran as 'unconstitutional'

Criticism of Trump’s Actions on Iran

Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif) and Senator Thomas Massie (R-Ky) expressed strong disapproval of President Donald Trump’s recent decision to authorize strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. Massie was clear in his stance, asserting, “This is not constitutional.”

The escalating tensions between Israel and Iran took center stage in the House this week, with lawmakers watching closely to see how Trump would proceed. It was noted that both House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader had been briefed on the planned strikes prior to their execution.

Massie raised concerns regarding the legality of Trump’s actions, stating, “Trump attacked Iran without Congressional permission.” He indicated a need to quickly return to Washington to support a war powers resolution aimed at curbing unauthorized military actions against Iran.

In the Senate, Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va) introduced his own resolution during this tumultuous week, attempting to limit the President’s authority to act unilaterally. This resolution aims to withdraw U.S. troops from actions deemed unauthorized against Iran, emphasizing the constitutional role of Congress in declaring war.

As debates intensified, Kaine remarked that the American public is largely opposed to U.S. military involvement in Iran. He criticized Trump’s rapid decision to strike, questioning the wisdom of such a move, especially after recent Israeli bombings reportedly set back Iran’s nuclear program by several years.

Massie, positioning himself as a staunch advocate against U.S. involvement in overseas conflicts, stated, “This is not our war.” He argued that any military action should be determined by Congress, not the President alone, and emphasized that his bipartisan coalition was gaining traction, including support from members of the progressive “Squad.”

Moreover, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) echoed this sentiment, reiterating, “This is not our fight.” Her comments came just before Trump’s announcement about military strikes.

Adding to the mix, prominent progressive figures like Pramila Jayapal and Ayana Pressley also criticized Trump’s actions, labeling them unconstitutional. They voiced concerns that he was bypassing Congress in making such critical military decisions.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt indicated that Trump would make a definitive decision regarding further military actions in the coming weeks. On Saturday, Trump asserted that U.S. forces had successfully struck key Iranian nuclear sites, claiming that all military assets had returned safely.

The recent strikes by Israel against Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure were initially seen as preemptive, and Iran has condemned these actions, suggesting they equate to a declaration of war. In response, Iran has stated that it will continue its uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes as needed.
