Barry Morphew reportedly assumed a false identity and lived with a woman for a month in Arizona while trying to evade detection prior to his arrest in connection with his wife’s murder, according to an arrest report that has just been made public.
Morphew was indicted on June 20, 2025, facing first-degree murder charges related to the death of Suzanne Morphew, 49, who was his wife and mother to their two daughters. She went missing on Mother’s Day 2020 in Colorado, where they resided. Barry Morphew was apprehended in Goodyear, Arizona, about 11 hours from where Suzanne disappeared.
During a status conference on Wednesday, Judge Amanda Hopkins approved a motion from the defense to delay Morphew’s scheduled murder trial in October. The defense needs more time to sift through the extensive evidence available.
Although a new trial date was not established, Judge Hopkins instructed both the prosecution and defense to collaborate on suggesting a date by June 1, 2027.
In court, defense attorney Alexis Baer-Elson indicated that her team is going through what she described as a “mountain of discovery” and expects to be prepared for trial by May 2027.
The prosecution expressed concerns regarding the delay, arguing that a January 2027 trial date would still allow adequate preparation time. Judge Hopkins addressed the objections of Suzanne Morphew’s siblings, who expressed their desire for closure after years of mourning. They stated they had already made travel arrangements to be present for the trial.
Ultimately, Hopkins agreed to the postponement, emphasizing the importance of allowing both sides ample time to get ready for this significant trial.
The arrest report, obtained through a public records request, mentions that Morphew used the alias “Lee Moore” while in Arizona. He was living with a woman who only knew him by that name. She reported to authorities that he started living with her on May 1, 2025, and had moved out most of her personal belongings. They had met in late December 2024.
On June 15, the woman stated that Morphew revealed his real identity and claimed that his wife had been “kidnapped” in Colorado, according to the report.
The report details that law enforcement found an AR-15-style rifle and a silencer within a safe at Morphew’s residence.
Interestingly, in February, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation had alerted the Arizona Department of Public Safety to track Morphew’s movements in anticipation of the grand jury indictment. They also secured a warrant for a GPS device to be placed on his truck.
Additionally, it has been reported that Morphew paid property taxes in Cave Creek, Arizona, where he was also self-employed. Interestingly, a restaurant employee there knew him by a different name: Bruce. Charlie Roots, a bar manager, revealed that it wasn’t until the murder charge news broke on June 20 that he recognized Morphew’s real name.
Roots expressed his shock upon discovering Morphew’s background, saying he had been intrigued by the unfolding events. After the pandemic, he mentioned meeting Morphew, who primarily drank beer, switching between Miller Lite and Coors Light, and was seen at the bar a week before his arrest.
In a June 2025 indictment, prosecutors noted that certain tranquilizers were found in Suzanne Morphew’s bone marrow. They alleged that Barry Morphew used a veterinary tranquilizer to sedate and transport deer while living in Indiana. He has entered a not-guilty plea regarding the murder charge.
According to the prosecution, Morphew was the sole individual in the state possessing a prescription for the specific tranquilizers. Only organizations like the Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the National Park Service had access to such substances in the surrounding counties.
The indictment highlighted that, at the time of Suzanne Morphew’s disappearance, Barry Morphew was the only civilian with access to that tranquilizer. Morphew’s attorney previously reiterated his client’s innocence, stating that the case is being approached with predetermined conclusions by the government.
The attorney claimed that the situation remains unchanged and continues to maintain Morphew’s innocence.
