Officials in New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s administration had intended to meet with Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, but the meeting was postponed after the State Department reportedly stepped in.
Commissioner Ana Maria Alchila, who heads the international affairs department, was slated to meet with Iran’s permanent representative, Amir Saeed Iravani, on Tuesday. This was first reported by City Journal.
A U.S. official familiar with the situation confirmed the meeting was indeed planned. However, the State Department didn’t respond right away to inquiries for comments.
It’s noteworthy that this intervention is the second instance in recent weeks where the Trump administration has intervened concerning Mamdani’s interactions with international leaders. It seems there’s a heightened federal scrutiny of New York City’s foreign engagements under its new socialist mayor.
After the State Department became aware of the meeting, it was canceled, and State Department officials subsequently met with Mamdani’s team to clarify what conduct is permissible, according to reports.
The Iranian mission did not offer comments regarding the planned meeting, and Mamdani’s office also did not respond immediately.
Given that New York City hosts the United Nations, the Office of International Affairs frequently collaborates with the State Department on various international matters.
Trump has frequently mentioned feeling targeted by Iran, claiming he’s “number one” on its “kill list.” Recently, Israel provided intelligence to the president about a purported Iranian plot against him.
This canceled meeting is reminiscent of another occurrence earlier in June when a planned meeting between Mamdani and Colombian President Gustavo Petro was also scrapped due to objections from the State Department.
Archila, who was set to meet with the Iranian representatives, served as co-chair of New York State’s Progressive Working Families Party before her appointment. While she lacks prior diplomatic experience, she previously ran for Lieutenant Governor of New York in 2022.
Notably, Archila made headlines back in 2018 when she confronted former Senator Jeff Flake outside a Senate elevator, questioning his decision to vote for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh after hearing testimony from Christine Blasey Ford, who has alleged Kavanaugh assaulted her when they were teenagers. Kavanaugh has denied these claims.
