Journalists Urge Action Against Trump at WHCD

Over 200 journalists have joined together in an open letter, urging the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) to confront President Donald Trump directly at this Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD).

The letter, published on Monday, emphasized the need for the WHCA to express its opposition to Trump’s ongoing efforts to undermine press freedom. It noted that the dinner has traditionally celebrated the essential role of a free press in democracy and the First Amendment. The authors argue that allowing Trump to attend while he systematically attacks the media contradicts this purpose.

The letter elaborated on various actions taken by the Trump administration, including retaliatory bans, frivolous lawsuits against news outlets, and direct verbal assaults on journalists. It stated that these activities represent the most extensive assault on press freedom by a sitting president.

This year’s WHCD is described as being distinctly different; the organizing journalists believe it cannot proceed as usual while honoring someone who seemingly undermines their work every day. They are calling on WHCA leadership to denounce Trump’s threats during the event.

“We urge you to speak out forcefully against an individual who seems determined to erode our long-standing commitment to an independent, robust, and free press,” the letter said. The signatories emphasized that press freedom transcends partisan politics and that such behavior should not be normalized.

Among the notable figures who signed the letter are former CBS News anchor Dan Rather, former ABC News White House correspondent Sam Donaldson, and PBS NewsHour correspondent Stephanie See.

The letter detailed several instances of the Trump administration’s attacks on press freedom, including feuds with the media and legal disputes with major news organizations.

In response to the letter, the White House press secretary highlighted Trump’s social nature, noting that he accepted the WHCA’s invitation to attend the dinner, framing it almost as a recognition of his standing as “one of the greatest presidents in history.” Interestingly, this will be Trump’s first attendance at the WHCD as president, after previously boycotting the event both last year and during his first term.
