Trump announces that Iran has freed American citizen Dena Karari.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced that Iran has freed an American woman, identified as Dena Kalari, who had been “unjustly detained” for the past 18 months. Her attorney, Jared Guenther, confirmed the release, noting that Kalari, an Iranian-American, had faced espionage accusations related to her work with a nonprofit that supports impoverished children.

Trump stated on Truth Social that she was taken into custody in December 2024 during the Biden administration. “Iran has allowed unjustly detained American citizens to leave the country in December 2024 during the Sleepy Joe Biden ‘President’ era,” he said.

Kalari is reportedly safe outside of Iran now and in good condition. This release is significant as it’s the first time an American has been freed from Iranian custody since 2023, marking a notable development in the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

The President expressed gratitude toward Iran for their “show of goodwill,” stating, “The United States appreciates this act of goodwill by Iran!”

Kalari’s legal representative explained that she was targeted due to her association with the Children of Mail Foundation, a U.S. nonprofit that offers educational support and humanitarian aid to children in rural Iran. Under the current regime, associations with American organizations can be viewed with suspicion, often leading to security-related charges.

It’s worth noting that Kalari was never officially imprisoned but rather subjected to a “forced exit ban,” where she endured multiple interrogations by the Ministry of Intelligence and Security, suffering considerable physical and mental distress.

Her attorney called for Iran to revoke any remaining charges against individuals who supported the Mehr Children’s Foundation, asserting they are innocent. He also urged Iran to release all unjustly imprisoned Americans, along with other political prisoners.

Reportedly, Iran may still be holding eight or more American citizens or residents, a number that could potentially be higher than what’s publicly known. Among those currently detained are Kamran Hekmati, held since May 2025, and Reza Valizadeh, a journalist who has been in custody since March 2024.

A State Department official previously mentioned that Trump is actively working to secure the release of detained Americans globally. They emphasized Iran’s notorious history of holding foreign citizens for political leverage and called for the immediate release of these individuals.

In conclusion, recent tensions suggest a complex and evolving relationship between the U.S. and Iran, especially regarding the treatment of dual nationals and hostages.
