Trump Endorses Iraqi Prime Minister Nominee Ali al-Zaidi
President Donald Trump has officially supported the nomination of Ali al-Zaidi as Iraq’s prime minister, indicating a potential shift in U.S.-Iraq diplomatic relations.
After a direct conversation with al-Zaidi, Trump issued a statement portraying this nomination as the start of a positive chapter for Iraq. He expressed his eagerness to cultivate a partnership focused on stability and economic growth.
By inviting al-Zaidi to the White House if he successfully establishes a government, the administration marked a distinct departure from prior political tensions this year. This move positions al-Zaidi as a crucial ally in regional security and economic collaboration.
“Congratulations to Ali al-Zaidi on his nomination as the next Prime Minister of Iraq! I wish him every success in his efforts to form a new government free of terrorism that can bring a bright future to Iraq,” Trump shared on Truth Social on Thursday.
“We look forward to a robust and dynamic new relationship between Iraq and the United States. This marks the start of an exciting new chapter for our countries, filled with opportunities for prosperity and stability like we’ve never seen before. Once again, Ali, congratulations!” the President added.
Following his appointment by Iraqi President Nizar Amedi on Monday, al-Zaidi now faces a significant 30-day timeframe to finalize his cabinet and present it to the House of Representatives for approval.
Analysis from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies highlights that this deadline means al-Zaidi must garner parliamentary backing for his ministers before he can officially take over and succeed the outgoing government.
Although his nomination by the Coordination Framework has ended a five-month political stalemate, the success of his transition largely hinges on his ability to navigate Iraq’s polarized political environment and assemble a government that meets both local and international expectations.
