Murder Charges Filed Against California Man Who Fled to Peru

A man from California is facing murder charges after allegedly killing his wife and then fleeing to Peru with their children. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office reported that the husband, who is 36 years old, made initial claims that immigration officials had taken his wife, according to court documents.

The District Attorney’s Office stated, “A felony murder complaint has been filed against this man, who reportedly fled to Peru after the incident.” District Attorney Nathan J. Hochmann emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, stating that domestic violence not only disrupts families but also devastates communities. He assured a commitment to hold the accused accountable and restore justice for the victims.

The suspect has been identified as Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo, and his wife was Sheylla Cabrera, age 33. Reports indicate that Sherla and her three children went missing on August 12.

Cabrera initially reported that his wife had been taken by authorities. However, according to his sister, he later said that she had left him for another man. In yet another version, he claimed there had been an accident involving her.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured Cabrera dragging a large object, raising suspicions. A follow-up investigation by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Office revealed additional video of him moving this object from their apartment, where both he, his wife, and their children lived. Investigators suspect foul play in the case, which led them to notify the Homicide Bureau.

On August 16, Sheylla Cabrera’s body was discovered near a bank of Angel National Forest. Authorities concluded that she had died at the crime scene. Following these events, Cabrera was said to be hiding in Peru with the couple’s children.

Sheylla’s mother expressed deep sorrow over the loss, sharing that her daughter had confided in her about Cabrera’s history of violence. “My daughter told me he had attacked her, even hitting our youngest grandson,” she said, emphasizing the abuse she had allegedly endured.

The Peruvian Consulate confirmed that Cabrera had recently traveled to Peru with their three children, who have now been deemed safe and placed in custody there. The Los Angeles County District Attorney is currently evaluating whether to bring more serious charges against Cabrera, who could face a maximum sentence of 26 years if convicted.

Anyone with further information about this case is encouraged to reach out to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department or Crime Stoppers.
