San Francisco Community Shaken by Tragic Stabbing
The San Francisco community is in shock following a tragic incident where a father was fatally stabbed while walking his eight-year-old son home from elementary school on Wednesday.
The alleged assailant was apprehended approximately 170 miles away in Tuolumne County on Friday. However, police have kept many details of the horrifying event under wraps.
According to law enforcement, the stabbing occurred around 4:30 PM, just steps from Commodore Throat Elementary School, specifically at the crosswalk between Ocean Avenue and Junipero Serra Boulevard.
Interim police chief, Paul Yep, expressed his dismay, stating, “The murder was horrifying. A father, walking with his son, was brutally attacked after what appeared to be an argument with the suspect.”
The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Robert Paul Bird II. His family shared on social media that he passed away holding his son’s hand.
While there was an altercation reported between Bird and the suspect, specifics on their interaction remain scarce. Director Mirna Melgar noted, “Witnesses heard some exchanges, and the perpetrator stabbed the victim and fled.”
Yep emphasized the urgency of the investigation, highlighting that numerous officers were engaged around the clock, using evidence from surveillance cameras, drones, and witness accounts to track down the suspect.
District Attorney Brook Jenkins reassured the public that while this attack wasn’t random, she did not provide additional details. She also mentioned that they are currently determining the charges to be filed against the suspect.
“We will find you and bring you to justice for any violent crime,” asserted San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie.
A GoFundMe campaign established for Bird’s family has successfully raised over $62,000. The page described him as a devoted father and a vibrant presence in the lives of those who knew him, evoking memories of laughter and joy he brought to others.
