Tom Steyer Proposes Bold Immigration Measures in Gubernatorial Campaign

Tom Steyer, the current frontrunner among Democrats in California’s gubernatorial race, has rolled out a sweeping anti-ICE immigration policy as he pursues the state’s highest office.

Once lagging in the polls, the hedge fund billionaire has shifted the conversation, especially after the media spotlight shifted to Eric Swalwell. On Tuesday, he shared a five-point plan which is notably more progressive than those of other Democratic candidates, including the incumbent governor.

The 68-year-old founder of Farallon Capital Management has taken a strong stance, vowing to repeal all federal immigration laws, imprison federal immigration enforcement officials, and facilitate the return of deported individuals to the U.S.

Steyer’s immigration agenda calls for the dismantling of California’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. He expressed intentions to prosecute ICE agents and their supervisors for any rule violations he perceives.

He also claimed that, as governor, he would have the power to travel to foreign nations, reclaim deported individuals, and bring them back to California.

Furthermore, Steyer stated he would disregard any U.S. Supreme Court rulings that do not align with his views.

He argued that his proposals are interconnected to form a comprehensive strategy that would enable California to effectively oppose and challenge ICE.

In his first point, he accused ICE of utilizing “racial profiling” when arresting undocumented immigrants, which he believes contradicts California laws prohibiting such practices. He pledged to hold federal immigration officials accountable for enforcing these laws.

The next element of his plan promises to empower state attorneys general to hold ICE leadership answerable for acts of aggression.

Steyer emphasized that his proposal allows California’s judicial system to pursue criminal charges against ICE officers, and their superiors, though he didn’t clarify how state law would override federal authority.

He outlined a strategy for establishing a dedicated unit within the state attorney general’s office focused on seeking “evidence” against federal immigration agents.

Moreover, Steyer made clear his belief that as governor, he could overturn federal deportation rulings. He envisioned using state resources to send representatives abroad and fund the return of deported individuals to California “to assist those who have been detained and denied due process.”

Lastly, he committed to allocating more state funds to educate undocumented immigrants on their rights, aiming to protect them from potential immigration law violations.

Steyer declared plans for a significant “Know Your Rights” campaign throughout California. He asserted that all residents, regardless of immigration status, should be aware of their rights during encounters with ICE agents, including during protests or when documenting illegal actions by officials.

He maintained that California has a solid legal basis to enhance protections and prosecute ICE agents who break the law, adding that the state should take the initiative in extending these legal safeguards to its residents.

Expanding protections, he argued, is a crucial step, targeting ICE’s alleged misuse of authority for racial profiling and violence.

Steyer also compared his approach to historical figures in law enforcement, proclaiming, “Trump turned ICE into a criminal organization, so let’s treat it that way.” He suggested he would pursue ICE with the same tenacity that faced organized crime.

In conclusion, Steyer asserted that his leadership would focus on safeguarding vulnerable populations in California and holding accountable those who break the law. He warned ICE that in California, respect for the law and residents is non-negotiable: failure to comply would lead to serious consequences.

He defended his announcements, especially following a comment from Tesla financier Elon Musk, who dubbed his proposals “amazing.”
