After sharing the letter, Leguizamo also took to Twitter, commenting, “The more inclusive America is, the better. The more we benefit. Get creative! Don’t give up. I’m still awake! How about you?”
A number of celebrities are also tagged under the post, including Missy Elliott, Shaquille O’Neal, Whoopi Goldberg and actress Naomi Watts.
“I had to speak up! And I will continue to speak up until there is equality!” Leguizamo wrote in a second tweet, tagging Democrats including Sens. Cory Booker and Rashida Jones.
The actual ad text is as follows:
“May this be the year that we finally embrace change,” he began, “May this be the year that we find true equality and that artists of color are represented in all fields, not just one.”
“You’re probably tired of hearing words like ‘inclusion’ and ‘diversity’ and you’re just stalling, trying to understand how to turn these sentiments into action. Look no further, it’s easy!” he continued.
“There are hundreds of prolific non-white artists who deserve to be nominated for this year’s awards — not just because they’re Black, Brown, Indigenous or Asian, but because they are truly incredible, extraordinary artists who have achieved greatness with their feet on their necks for so long.”
“Let this be the beginning of a new era,” he added. “Let’s stop making awards shows white-dominated. Instead, let’s use this year to inspire the next generation of minority and underrepresented artists… who may see themselves onstage and think, ‘If they can do it, maybe I can do it…'” the letter concluded.
