Trump Reinstates Presidential Fitness Test

On May 5, 2026, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation to reinstate the Presidential Fitness Test Award, which is part of the “Make America Healthy Again (MAHA)” initiative. This action is aimed at promoting fitness in schools.

The test, initially introduced by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, had been discontinued in 2012 during Barack Obama’s presidency. The Obama administration replaced it with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program as part of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative, which focused more on health evaluations than on competitive metrics.

“The next few years will be a golden age for athletics,” Trump stated, flanked by young athletes in the Oval Office.

President Trump criticized the previous administration’s decision to phase out the fitness program. “Thank you, Barack. Great job,” he quipped, asserting his commitment to restoring traditions in American sports and values of excellence for future generations.

“We have to teach young Americans not just to compete but also to handle both victory and defeat,” Trump added, emphasizing the importance of maintaining fitness standards.

During the signing event, Trump interacted with child athletes, asking them about their sports and joking around. His light-hearted comments aimed to engage the children, reinforcing camaraderie among them.

“I work out a lot,” he said jokingly, although many probably consider his daily routine rather minimal.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. shared a story about his father hiking 50 miles to prove fitness during John F. Kennedy’s presidency. He lamented that physical competition had been undervalued in recent years, insisting that it is essential for international competitiveness.

Secretary Kennedy expressed concern for the nearly three-quarters of American youth who are ineligible for military service, primarily due to fitness levels.

The Department of the Army will now incorporate physical fitness into education, making it mandatory in schools. Military officials argue that establishing fitness standards is crucial for a successful military force.

President Trump also declared May as National Fitness and Sports Month, reinforcing the government’s dedication to promoting healthier lifestyles across the nation.

“I’m proud to activate the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition as we take fitness seriously again,” he remarked.

Transitioning to the South Lawn, Trump oversaw kids engaged in various sports exercises as they worked out to the song “Eye of the Tiger.” He even led some playful dancing, demonstrating a more personal side to his role as President.

While there’s a lot to unpack in terms of policies and motivations, Trump seems genuinely invested in rekindling a national emphasis on fitness, perhaps reflecting a broader vision for America’s physical and competitive edge.
