Austin Police Officer Removed from Patrol After Punching Incident

A police officer in Austin, Texas, was taken off the streets last week after a video emerged showing him punching a man in the face, causing the individual to fall to the ground. The officer, identified only as Officer Garcia, has reportedly been placed on restricted duty, according to local reports.

The video, highlighted by Blaze News earlier in the week, captures the moment just as the police officer throws a punch, followed immediately by the man hitting the ground. The incident took place during a “crowd control” operation on 6th Street last Friday night, but details regarding the events leading up to the punch remain unclear.

Additional footage, shared by KVUE, offers a clearer perspective, showing the officer striking a man dressed in an orange shirt and a backwards baseball cap. Austin police confirmed that they are reviewing the situation and have stated that appropriate actions may follow.

Interestingly, there was another incident that same night involving a different officer, who was also seen striking a person during the chaotic scene. According to KVUE, witnesses provided video evidence showing an officer on top of an individual while delivering multiple punches. Another officer was noted to be pinning down another person in a similar manner.

In a related twist, the man who was seen in the original viral video (the punch recipient) was observed watching the second incident unfold. This man appears to be the same individual who was punched earlier.

Documents from the Travis County District Court indicate that the situation escalated when Officer Leger, responding to a reported altercation outside a local nightclub, was attacked from behind. He attempted to subdue one of the individuals involved, which led to further violence, resulting in multiple punches being thrown by the officers involved.

The individual allegedly responsible for attacking Officer Leger has been identified as 19-year-old Johnny Acuña Jacobo, who has since been arrested on charges related to assaulting a peace officer.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis addressed the situation, acknowledging community concerns and emphasizing the seriousness of the matter. Mayor Kirk Watson echoed these sentiments, stating that the conduct displayed is unacceptable and expressing confidence in the ongoing investigation.
