Joy Reid Reflects on Her Ouster from MSNBC

Former MSNBC host Joy Reid shared her thoughts on Tuesday regarding the factors that contributed to her unexpected firing from the network, suggesting that discussions surrounding President Donald Trump and the conflict in Gaza might have played a significant role.

During an appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” Reid was queried about her abrupt exit from MSNBC in February. She asserted that the decision had nothing to do with ratings, even though viewership had noticeably dropped post-2024 election. “We actually held a ratings meeting just two weeks before I was let go,” Reid explained. “We were told, ‘You guys are doing better than your competitors.’ So, the ratings were fine. Everything was fine. Honestly, since I left, the ratings haven’t really improved.”

Reid also noted that rumors about her position at the network had circulated shortly before her dismissal. “I hadn’t received any warnings or calls saying, ‘You’ve done something wrong, you’re in trouble,'” she recalled. The day after these rumors surfaced, she was abruptly informed of her firing. “It was just, ‘We want to make some changes.’ No clear reasons were given. It left me in a confusing space, just like everyone else.”

On her final show, Reid had expressed concerns about “fascism being here already,” hinting at deeper issues within the discourse surrounding her work. “There are really two topics that seem to have made management uncomfortable,” she pointed out. “First, there’s Trump. He seems to have this incredible sway, to the extent that major organizations are on edge. And then, of course, there’s Gaza. I’ve noticed that discussing the Palestinian perspective isn’t something cable news tends to embrace, which often leaves folks feeling uneasy.”

In the wake of her firing, MSNBC has yet to provide a comment on the situation.

Reid concluded with a sense of defiance regarding her approach to controversial subjects like Black Lives Matter and immigration. “I won’t apologize for being forthright about these issues. They hold tremendous importance, and I feel proud of the work I did.”
